V: TEACHING PRACTICE

     The weather was good when I started my first teaching on Thursday, January, 24th. That day I teach three classes. They were LG 7413, LG 7412, and LG 7211.

5.1 Procedure of Teaching

a. Pre-Activity 
     The first class was LG 7413. The lesson of that day was about Appositive. Firstly, I introduced myself. I asked their condition, and their feeling that met me again. I asked them whether they were happy or not learning with me. Then, I asked them who was absent that day. There was no student absent that day. After that, I gave them a sentence that contained appositive such as “My friend, Diana is my close friend.” and asked them the function of word “Diana”. Some of them answered subject. And one of them answered as complement that rename subject, and it was almost correct. After that I gave the objectives of lesson for the topic to the student.

b. Main Activity 
    I explained what appositive was. I explained while showing power point presentation about that topic. I explained point per point. I provided a sentence for every point and asked students which one was the appositive. Next, I gave an assignment through games. I called it as whispering game. I divided them into four groups. Each group provided 4 representatives. Those representatives came forward. Then I explained the rules. The rules were 1. I gave a sentence to the last representative. S/he should whisper that sentence to a representative in front of her/his. Then, continuing it till the first representative. After hearing the sentence, the first representative might write down the sentence they heard on the board and identify the appositive. They were happy doing this game. It was not only checking their understanding about the topic through writing skill, but also checking their listening skill. That game involved integrated skill. The next activity was giving them formative assignment. I provided 16 questions to be answered in 10 minutes. After that I discussed the answer together with the students. The questions which could be discussed only 6 questions. The others were discussed in the next meeting.

c. Closing Activity
            I reviewed the material that they had learned that day. I asked students to raise hand and explained me the material. More than 2 students explained me the material. Then I asked them some questions related to the topic. I also gave them sentence and asked them to identify which one the appositive. After that I informed them about quiz for the next day and asked them to study. The last, I close the lesson, and asked a leader to lead prayer.

5.2 Time Management and Organizing Activities
I can manage the time in teaching, and organize the activities in the class. My teacher was satisfied with me and gave me good comment. She said that the activities that I did included in using whispering game, build integrated skill in which not only trained student writing skill, but also listening skill. The student was also very interested during the class. No one was boring.

5.3 Problem-Solving
            There are some problems in my first teaching, such as different pronunciation with student. Sometimes student did not understand what I mean because of different pronunciation. Then, in whispering game I did not give opportunity to other member of group to join the games. To solve those problem, in the next teaching I tried to correct my pronunciation, and change one of rules, so other member could get opportunity to join the game.

5.4 Classroom Management
            Sometimes the students were crowded and noisy. To manage it, I said “seat properly” to make them silent and pay attention to me. I also had rule. When I said “Attention please”, student had to answer “Ay ay captain” and be silent. Sometimes I also just became quite till the students were aware it, and stop talking or be silent.
